Ricardo Montesinos Exhibition in the Luis A. Noboa Naranjo Museum

Verónica Molina views the exhibition entitled From the ucuyayas to the universe in a nutshell, by Cuencan visual artist, Ricardo Montesinos, which will remain open until next Tuesday in the Luis A. Noboa Naranjo Museum.
One of the more than 200 works comprising the visual exhibition.
Going through the display on exhibit by Cuencan visual artista, Ricardo Montesinos, it is possible to detect his personal preoccupations that, in certain cases, take on a global dimension.
The Luis A. Noboa Naranjo Museum (P. Icaza 302 and Córdova, Cóndor Building) is holding a retrospective of his work. The painting, From the ucuyayas to the universe in a nutshell, comprises 240 works, in medium and large format and executed in a range of materials, above all with organic materials and fired, says the artist.
The works belong to his prívate collection. Their subject matter is varied and, according to Montesinos, in all, “mercy towards the human bieng, towards nature, towards the world” predomínate.
“I believe in God and have studied in esoteric schools, for which reason my approach to the mercy that exists on Earth is present in my work,” he states.
Montesinos says that his interests also extend to the harm that man brings on himself. For that reason, he has works that evoke events in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb destroyed hundreds of human beings; or global warming that “little by little is destroying our environment.”
Together with the Ecuadorian painter, Edgar Carrasco, the Cuencan also envisions Manuela Sáenz.
“We base ourselves on Greco’s Virgin and he (Carrasco) elaborates images of Manuelita while I give them color,” he mentioned.
Montesinos has works in which he presents displays of clothes that are based on a request by designer, Olga Doumet. “My works are aimed at dressing the futuristic woman, and I have added thorns, because Frida Kahlo used them and that attracted me to her,” she explained.
The Montesinos retrospective also includes series that refer, for example, to the fall of the Twin Towers, on 11 September 2001; to the wrongful existence of the run of the bulls; to Bolivar’s rush to unify America; and to the “spirit of the Cañari people with the ucuyayas (funerial rites from the Narrio culture.)”
The exhibition, which will be open until the 13th from 10:30am to 6pm, and Saturdays and Sundays, from 1pm until 6pm, also includes works by his daughter Daniaba.

Ricardo Montesinos
A new face for Manuelita
He began as an artist in Santiago de Chile at 18 years of age and today, after a long trajectory, he is displaying closet o 220 paintings in the Luis A. Noboa Naranjo Museum (P. Icaza 302 and Córdova, first floor, Seguros Cóndor Building).
The exhibition evokes the scene of Ricardo Montesinos, who on repeated occasions has won the July Salon and the Cuenca Salon. He is a meticulous and systematic interrogator of the materials with which he creates his paintings.
Among his designs one finds the elaboration of a cathedral floating in the Guayas River, of which he owns a collection of more than 20 paintings dedicated to the work.
He has always worked in series, considering himself a reporter of painting; his subject matter is related to worldly, social, political and religious events, such as, among others, the fall of the Twin Towers or the atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which reveal human cruelty.
From his Bolivar and Manuela Sáenz collection he presents only an extract of the 400 works he has painted, in which he captures the postures of the predator (Bolivar) and the prey (Manuela).
Among the works that stand out in this exhibition are that of Manuelita Sáenz contracting marriage with Bolivar, a shamanic Bolivar, an unhinged Bolivar and the work which unites the three personalities – Bolivar, Quixote and Jesus – in their ideals.
“Bolivar was a great statesman, soldier, philosopher, lover, and above all predator…I’ve tried to construct the face of Manuela finding inspiration in el Greco…they preyed upon her, they made her a prostitute. Bolivar was a predator, he always tried to crush her and Manuelita strove to survive.”
